San Luis Obispo carries two distinct institutional identities: it's the seat of county government, with departments generating records-heavy IT equipment, and it's home to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, whose engineering and research programs retire lab computers and specialized equipment on an academic cycle. Both sources need a recycler that can document destruction, not just haul equipment away.
- County and municipal offices — retired workstations and hard drives containing public records that require verified, on-site destruction.
- Cal Poly departments and research labs — lab computers, project equipment, and networking gear cycled out between academic terms.
- Local businesses and downtown offices — routine desktop, laptop, and printer replacement.
Desktops, laptops, lab and research equipment, networking gear, monitors, printers, phones, all battery chemistries, and hard drives, including on-site shredding for records that can't leave the building unverified. County offices often add copiers and phone systems; Cal Poly labs add instruments and project hardware.
Six steps, with the documentation front-loaded. Before anything moves, we agree what each asset class needs (wipe, shred, reuse or recycle) and whether you need serial-level tracking. Then come containers, staff training and a pickup by our own crew, or on-site shredding for public records. At our Sacramento facility the load is processed and closed out with certificates and a report that a records officer or university procurement office can file.
You don't put it in the trash. California's universal waste rules keep TVs, monitors and most other electronics out of the garbage because of the lead, mercury and other hazardous materials inside them.
- At home: San Luis Obispo households aren't part of our service, since we work with businesses and institutions. Our sister company, Secure Recycle, handles consumer electronics at the same Sacramento location, 3921 Pell Circle, but from San Luis Obispo a local collection site listed by CalRecycle is the practical choice.
- At work: a county office, campus department or business can add TVs and monitors to a scheduled pickup, including older tube sets through our CRT monitor recycling service.
San Luis Obispo pickups run under our ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001-certified process, with the documented chain-of-custody government offices and university procurement teams require.

No obligation. We respond same business day.
Reviews
A little bit off the beaten track in Natomas, but Modern Waste quickly and efficiently helped me recycle my broken Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries at a reasonable $/lb fee (Sac county e-waste will not accept these items). Ramiro and Vincent were very friendly and helpful.
Chris was awesome! He came in and picked up all of the e-waste we had ready for him. He was polite and professional throughout the entire process. He handled the equipment with care, including the site equipment that was already in place. I am very happy with his service and appreciate the great job he did.
Aaron and Vincent were awesome, excellent customer service!
