A little bit off the beaten track in Natomas, but Modern Waste quickly and efficiently helped me recycle my broken Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries at a reasonable $/lb fee (Sac county e-waste will not accept these items). Ramiro and Vincent were very friendly and helpful.

Yes, if it fits in a vehicle. A practice with a few computers or a box of old cameras can bring them to our Sacramento drop-off at 3921 Pell Circle and ask for a certificate of recycling and destruction. For a remodel, a move or a full practice cleanout, a scheduled pickup around patient hours is usually easier.
Electronic dental equipment can. Intraoral cameras and scanners, curing lights, cordless handpiece batteries, chairside monitors and their computers are recycled with your other e-waste once they have been cleaned and disinfected. Sharps, amalgam and other regulated dental waste go through a licensed medical waste or amalgam service, not electronics recycling.
Treat every device that touched your practice software as a patient record. That includes the server, operatory and front desk computers, scanners, backup drives and some printers. Before recycling, the storage should be shredded or wiped to NIST 800-88, and you should keep a certificate of destruction that lists each device by serial number. We handle both steps and give you the certificate for your HIPAA file.
List what is transferring to the buyer and what is leaving. Equipment that stays with the practice keeps its data under the new owner, so settle that in the sale. For everything that leaves, we destroy the storage, recycle the hardware and give you certificates of destruction and recycling. Confirm your own record-retention obligations for patient charts before any drive is destroyed.
