San Luis Obispo is both the county seat and the home of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. County departments retire records-heavy workstations and drives that need verified destruction, and Cal Poly's engineering and research programs retire lab computers and specialized equipment on an academic cycle. That mix is different from the tourism-driven coastal towns elsewhere on the Central Coast, and most of our work here centers on documentation.
San Luis Obispo has its own page with the detail on county offices and Cal Poly. Our Central Coast route also covers Paso Robles, Atascadero, Morro Bay, Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach and Nipomo, and it continues south to Santa Maria and Goleta in Santa Barbara County.
Business and public-sector pickups can include desktops, laptops, servers, lab and research equipment, monitors and TVs, copiers and printers, phone systems, networking gear, UPS backups, battery-embedded devices, all battery chemistries and hard drives. For records that can't leave the building unverified, on-site hard drive shredding destroys drives at your location. Other loads go through secure data destruction at our facility and electronic waste recycling for the rest.
We don't hand distant jobs to a parcel carrier; our own crews drive the Central Coast route from our Sacramento facility. The six steps are the same as anywhere: containers, training, pickup, tracking, processing and reports. San Luis Obispo County pickups run under our ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certifications, with chain-of-custody records from pickup to final disposition.
We don't provide residential services; pickups are for businesses, agencies and institutions. Our sister company, Secure Recycle, takes household electronics at our Sacramento address, 3921 Pell Circle, which is a long way from the Central Coast, so most residents should use a local site from CalRecycle's list. Throwing electronics or batteries in the trash isn't allowed; they're universal waste under California rules.
Can university labs time a pickup to the academic calendar?
Yes. Tell us the term break you're working around and we'll schedule the pickup for it.
What does a county department get back?
A certificate of destruction for destroyed drives, a certificate of recycling for general equipment, and a report of what was received. At the top destruction tier, the certificate lists each drive by make, model and serial number.
Is there a minimum?
Minimums depend on the route and the material; a stop on a scheduled run can usually take a smaller load than a special trip.

A little bit off the beaten track in Natomas, but Modern Waste quickly and efficiently helped me recycle my broken Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries at a reasonable $/lb fee (Sac county e-waste will not accept these items). Ramiro and Vincent were very friendly and helpful.
