A national lab town at the edge of wine country

Livermore's identity is split between two of the country's premier national laboratories — Lawrence Livermore and Sandia — and the vineyards spreading across the valley's east side. That combination means our pickups here range from decommissioned lab server racks and research instrumentation to the ordinary office electronics of tasting rooms and small businesses downtown. Few East Bay cities ask us to plan for both a secure lab decommission and a small winery's point-of-sale upgrade in the same week.

Who uses our e-waste recycling in Livermore
  • National lab contractors and support vendors — retired server hardware, workstations, and research equipment requiring documented chain-of-custody from the moment it leaves a secure facility.
  • Tri-Valley corporate and professional offices — standard office electronics turnover for Livermore's growing business base along the I-580 corridor.
  • Wineries and downtown small businesses — point-of-sale systems, office computers, and battery recycling for a smaller-volume customer base that still needs the same certified process.
What e-waste items qualify for pickup from Livermore?

Desktops, laptops, server and lab equipment, monitors, printers, all battery chemistries, and hard drives with certified on-site or in-facility destruction, scaled to loads from a single office to a full lab cleanout. Contractors supporting sensitive lab work can request additional documentation to satisfy their own client or government reporting requirements, and we can coordinate around facility access restrictions when a pickup requires it.

Tasting rooms and downtown offices add copiers, phone systems, TVs and displays, modems and routers, UPS backups and battery-embedded devices. All of it can share a pickup with lab or server equipment.

What should you look for in a Livermore e-waste recycling company?

For computer recycling in Livermore, especially for contractors working near secure facilities, the questions that matter are who handles the equipment and what paper you get back. We run our own pickups and never subcontract them. Every load gets a ticket number, weights and, when your scope includes it, serial numbers. At our facility, data-bearing devices are triaged first, and you receive certificates of recycling or destruction, stored in our client portal. Those are steps three through six of our program; the first two are containers and training at your site. The full process is laid out on our pickup, tracking, processing and reports pages.

Modern Waste Solutions holds ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 certifications, providing the documented process research and government-adjacent work requires. We maintain the same certified chain-of-custody whether the load is leaving a secure lab or a small downtown office.

Can Livermore businesses throw e-waste in the trash?

No. California's universal waste rules don't allow electronic devices or batteries in the trash or a dumpster, and a lab workstation carries the added risk of the data on its drive. Businesses can book a pickup. Household electronics go to Secure Recycle, our sister company for consumers, which operates from our Sacramento address at 3921 Pell Circle, or to a closer site from CalRecycle's list. We don't offer residential service ourselves.

A little bit off the beaten track in Natomas, but Modern Waste quickly and efficiently helped me recycle my broken Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries at a reasonable $/lb fee (Sac county e-waste will not accept these items). Ramiro and Vincent were very friendly and helpful.

Chris was awesome! He came in and picked up all of the e-waste we had ready for him. He was polite and professional throughout the entire process. He handled the equipment with care, including the site equipment that was already in place. I am very happy with his service and appreciate the great job he did.
