San Pablo covers a small area of West Contra Costa County and is surrounded almost completely by the city of Richmond. Contra Costa College sits on its eastern side, and the city's commerce is packed along San Pablo Avenue and 23rd Street: phone and electronics repair shops, taquerias and bakeries, auto body and tire shops, community clinics, and tax and insurance offices.
That density shows in the e-waste. A phone repair shop may collect dead handsets and swollen batteries every week. An auto shop has lead acid batteries and diagnostic equipment. A clinic retires computers that held patient records. Each needs a different kind of care, and all of it can go out on one pickup.
- cell phones, tablets, and loose phone batteries from repair shops
- swollen or damaged lithium-ion batteries (packed separately for safety)
- lead acid batteries, chargers, and diagnostic tools from auto shops
- computers, laptops, monitors, and printers from offices and clinics
- registers, card readers, and security camera systems
- hard drives and phone storage that need data destruction
We set you up with the right containers first. Repair shops usually need a dedicated battery bin with tape and bags for damaged cells. Then we collect on a schedule or on call. At our Sacramento facility each load is logged, batteries are sorted by chemistry, and electronics are either refurbished for reuse or dismantled into metals, plastics, and circuit boards for approved recyclers. Everything is handled under our ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems, and you receive a certificate of recycling.
Phones and computers carry personal data even when they look dead. For clinics and offices, we wipe drives to NIST 800-88 or shred them and provide a certificate of destruction. Repair shops that collect customers' old phones can have the devices and their storage destroyed the same way. Read more about hard drive destruction.
No. California's universal waste rules prohibit putting electronics and most batteries in household or business trash, and that applies in San Pablo like everywhere else in the state. Loose lithium batteries are also a fire risk in a dumpster or garbage truck, so they should be taped and stored in a closed container until pickup.
We don't have one in San Pablo. Our recycling center is in Sacramento, at 3921 Pell Circle, and we serve San Pablo businesses by pickup. A business that would rather bring a load can use our business drop-off there. We work only with businesses and public agencies, so San Pablo residents should take household electronics to our sister company, Secure Recycle, at the same address. CalRecycle also lists collection sites closer to the Bay Area.
Request a quote, and tell us if you handle batteries in volume. We also serve nearby Richmond, El Cerrito, and Pinole, along with the rest of Contra Costa County.
No obligation. We respond same business day.
Reviews
A little bit off the beaten track in Natomas, but Modern Waste quickly and efficiently helped me recycle my broken Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries at a reasonable $/lb fee (Sac county e-waste will not accept these items). Ramiro and Vincent were very friendly and helpful.
Chris was awesome! He came in and picked up all of the e-waste we had ready for him. He was polite and professional throughout the entire process. He handled the equipment with care, including the site equipment that was already in place. I am very happy with his service and appreciate the great job he did.
