San Francisco is a city located in northern California, USA, on a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. It is a cultural and financial center of the western United States and one of the country’s most cosmopolitan cities. The city covers a land area of 46.9 square miles (121 square kilometers) and has an estimated population of 670,625 as of 2024. San Francisco has a long and rich history, founded in 1776 by Spanish settlers and originally named “Yerba Buena” after the native plant that was abundant in the area. The city was renamed “San Francisco” after Saint Francis of Assisi in 1846. San Francisco has been home to several major events, including the 1848 Gold Rush, the 1906 earthquake and fire, and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The city is known for its diverse scenic beauty, liberal politics, and cultural movements, including the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the LGBTQ rights movement of the 1970s. San Francisco is also home to several attractions, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the California Academy of Sciences.
