It has a population of about 34,350 in 2024 and is known for its association with the oil industry, being the birthplace of Merle Haggard, and its intractable poverty, drug problems, and legacy of racism. The area offers limited shopping options, but good places to eat. It has a hot, dry climate with mild winters and is characterized by dry grasslands and some desert plants.
