Novato is a city located in Marin County, California, United States. It is the northernmost city in Marin County, approximately 29 miles north of San Francisco and 37 miles northwest of Oakland. The city covers an area of 28 square miles and has a population of nearly 52,000 as of the 2024 census. Novato has a rural atmosphere due to its low population density and the high amount of open space, including more than 3,600 acres of open space, making it a haven for hiking and mountain biking. Novato has a rich history, dating back to 1300 when Miwok Native Americans inhabited the area. The city has several historical buildings, including the Novato History Museum, City Hall, and Druid’s Hall. Novato is also home to the Marin Museum of the American Indian, which celebrates the history of the early culture of the area.
