San Francisco County, located in California, is the smallest county in the state, occupying just forty-seven square miles of land. It is situated on a hilly peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Bukta Bay, and it shares a border with San Mateo County to the south. The estimated population of the county as of 2024 is 901,457. The county is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley (SFOB) Metropolitan Area, which is home to over 9.6 million people, making it the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

The county’s most prominent hills include Twin Peaks, Mount Davidson, and Mount Sutro, all of which are more than 900 feet in height. Some of the best-known hills in San Francisco are Nob Hill and Telegraph Hill. The county also contains the natural islands of Alcatraz and Yerba Buena, as well as the man-made island of Treasure Island.

San Francisco County is governed by a charter form of government, and its board of supervisors consists of 11 districts, each represented by a supervisor. The county’s seat is San Francisco, which is also the commercial, financial, and cultural center of Northern California.
