Clarksville, also known as Tong Ranch, is an unincorporated community nestled in El Dorado County, California. Situated 14 miles (23 km) west-southwest of Placerville and perched at an elevation of 676 feet (206 m), this historic locale has roots dating back to the California gold rush.

Originally flourishing with over a thousand residents and a bustling business scene, Clarksville experienced its heyday during the gold rush era. However, the community’s population dwindled over the years, and by 1931, only twenty residents remained. Today, little physical evidence remains of its past prosperity, but the Clarksville Heritage Society diligently works to preserve and showcase the town’s rich history.

Clarksville once boasted a post office that operated from 1855 to 1924, with a brief hiatus from 1925 to 1934. The remnants of this bygone era, now largely faded, contribute to the historical tapestry of this once-thriving community in El Dorado County. According to the 2024 census, it has a population of 45,340.
