Carpinteria, CA, is a small seaside city located in southeastern Santa Barbara County, California. With a population of 12,719 at the 2024 census, it is known for its beautiful beaches, breathtaking mountain views, and diverse economy. The city is situated on the Central Coast of California, approximately 12 miles southeast of Santa Barbara.

Carpinteria’s history dates back to pre-colonial times when it was home to a Chumash village known as Šujtu. The city’s name, La Carpinteria or “The Carpenter Shop,” was first used by the soldiers of the Gaspar de Portola expedition in 1769. Carpinteria was incorporated on September 28, 1965, and is governed by an elected five-member City Council and a City Manager appointed by the Council.

The city is known for its unique Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean Revival architecture, which can be seen throughout the downtown area and residential neighborhoods. Carpinteria State Beach is a popular attraction, offering visitors a mile of beach for swimming, surf fishing, tidepool exploring, and camping. The city also has several parks and recreational facilities, including the Carpinteria/Summerland Fire District, Carpinteria Sanitary District, Carpinteria Valley Water District, and Carpinteria Cemetery District.
